Can Dental Implants Get Cavities Like Real Teeth?

Cavities affect nearly everyone at some point in their life; they are the most common oral health issue. If you no longer have natural teeth, then, you might wonder if cavities are still something you need to be concerned about. Can dental implants get them, or are prosthetic teeth impervious to decay? This blog post explains what you should know.

Dental Implants Cannot Get Cavities

Natural teeth get cavities when bacteria in the mouth feed on the sugars and starches you consume. This process forms an acidic biofilm known as plaque, which can damage tooth enamel and cause small pits (cavities) to form.

Dental implant restorations (crowns, bridges, and dentures) are made of materials that are very different from natural tooth enamel. Therefore, even though plaque can still form in your mouth, it will not cause cavities in your prosthetic teeth.

Oral Hygiene Is Still Important

Even though dental implants are not vulnerable to cavities, that is no excuse to neglect oral hygiene! Bacteria and plaque can accumulate on the surface of your implants and around the gumline, just as they do with natural teeth. This buildup can cause inflammation, gum disease, and other complications that compromise the health of your mouth. It could even lead to dental implant failure!

Here are some tips to keep your mouth healthy and clean if you have dental implants:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste.
  • Floss daily with implant-safe dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth and around your implants.
  • Use a water flosser to help remove debris and plaque from hard-to-reach areas around your implants.
  • Rinse with mouthwash to help reduce harmful bacteria. Ask your dental team for product recommendations.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and checkups to monitor the health of your implants and gums.
  • Avoid smoking and limit consumption of sugary foods and drinks, since these can increase the risk of gum disease and oral health issues.

Dental implants are similar to natural teeth in a lot of ways — but thankfully, cavities are not a concern for them! Talk to your dentist if you have questions about how to care for your prosthetic smile so it stays in great shape for the long haul.
