Gum Disease and Facial Collapse: What Should You Know?

Senior man experiencing facial collapse

In its earliest stages, gum disease is a mild infection of the pink tissue that surrounds the teeth. If it receives timely treatment, it should have no lasting consequences. But what if it goes untreated for too long? It can cause serious damage and even affect your facial shape by causing a problem known as facial collapse. How does this happen, and how can you protect your appearance? This blog post explains.

What Is Facial Collapse? How Does It Happen?

Facial collapse is a significant and distressing condition that can occur as a result of untreated gum disease. Here is an overview of how this happens:

  • Bone loss: Gum disease initiates an inflammatory response in the gums, which can lead to the deterioration of the jawbone.
  • Tooth loss: As the bone structure weakens, teeth may become loose and eventually fall out. The absence of teeth worsens the bone loss, as there is no longer any pressure from tooth roots to stimulate and preserve the bone.
  • Facial changes: The loss of teeth and bone results in the collapse of the facial structure. This condition manifests as a sunken appearance of the cheeks and lips, creating an aged and hollow look. The lower part of your face may appear shorter, and your chin could protrude more prominently. You may also look like you are always scowling.

Preserving Your Facial Shape

The good news is that facial collapse is preventable! Here are some tips to help you take good care of your gums and the underlying bone structure:

  • Attend regular dental checkups: Try to visit your dentist at least twice a year for a checkup. Early detection of gum disease can lead to timely treatment and prevent it from progressing.
  • Maintain a thorough oral hygiene routine: Try to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. If you have any questions about how to make your routine as thorough and effective as possible, talk to your dental hygienist or dentist.
  • Avoid modifiable risk factors for gum disease: Steer clear of habits that increase the risk of gum disease, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and a diet high in sugar and ultra-processed foods. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Seek prompt treatment if you have concerns about the health of your gums: If you notice signs of gum disease, such as bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, or swollen and red gums, seek treatment immediately. Early intervention can prevent further damage and protect your facial structure.
  • Replace lost teeth as soon as possible: If you have already experienced tooth loss due to gum disease or other factors, ask your dentist about dental implants. These rebuild lost teeth from the roots up and can do much to preserve your facial structure.

Remember, the health of your gums plays a crucial role in maintaining your overall appearance! Taking steps to prevent and treat gum disease will help to preserve your natural facial shape.
