Let Your Children’s Dentist Prevent Cavities With Dental Sealants

Dental caries (cavities) are astonishingly common among children. In fact, in 2015 -2016, 43 percent of children ages 2 – 19 had at least one cavity. That statistic marks a 50 percent decrease over four years earlier, which means that fewer children are suffering from dental decay. As amazing as that is, there is still a lot of room for improvement. That is why your children’s dentist in Auburn may recommend that your child receive dental sealants. This simple treatment has the potential to stop cavities before they start and prevent your little one from becoming another statistic.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin coating of plastic that a dentist in Auburn or dental hygienist applies to the chewing surfaces of teeth. Usually, they’re only placed on permanent molars and premolars (in some cases, they may be used for primary teeth). They create a barrier between the teeth and the food particles and bacteria that would otherwise cling to the enamel and contribute to decay.

Placing dental sealants is a quick and painless procedure. It typically goes something like this:

  • The teeth are thoroughly cleaned. Then, they are dried and must be kept dry throughout the procedure.
  • A mild etching solution roughens up the teeth’s chewing surfaces, which will help the sealants adhere to them.
  • The sealant material is applied.
  • A special light cures the sealants, hardening it so the patient can resume normal eating habits right away.

Following the treatment, the sealants may last for up to 10 years. During regular checkups, your dentist will examine the sealants and recommend repair or replacement when necessary.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Dentists typically recommend sealants for children who already have their permanent premolars and/or molars. The sooner the sealants can be placed on these teeth, the greater their opportunity to stop decay from forming. This preventive treatment is so valuable for young ones because they may not have established good brushing and flossing habits. It is particularly good for children who have deep grooves in their teeth, which are more likely to collect food particles and other debris.

Adults with deep grooves in their teeth, or who simply want extra protection for their smile, may also be good candidates for dental sealants.

Sealing Is Better than Filling

Fillings and other restorative treatments are available to patients who develop cavities. However, it is better to seal out the cavities rather than fill them in after they form. Sealants help to preserve the entire tooth structure, making it more likely that a tooth will last for a lifetime.

Dental sealants, along with other preventive treatments, can protect young smiles from the pain of tooth decay. Why not ask your children’s dentist if this procedure is right for the little one in your family?
