These conditions occur when the tissues in a baby\u2019s lip and\/or palate\ndo not fuse together properly during the second or third month of pregnancy.\nGenetics can certainly play a role in causing a cleft lip or palate, but do\nother factors come into play? An oral surgeon is here to discuss prominent risk\nfactors for these deformities and how you might be able to prevent your child\nfrom developing a cleft lip or palate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risk Factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some possible risk factors for cleft lip and cleft palate\ninclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Obesity during pregnancy. <\/strong>Some research\nsuggests that obese mothers are more likely to bear children with a cleft lip\nor cleft palate.<\/li><li><strong>Diabetes.<\/strong> Women with diabetes are more\nlikely to have children with a cleft lip or cleft palate.<\/li><li><strong>Exposure to certain substances.<\/strong> A\nmother\u2019s alcohol consumption and tobacco usage may contribute to the formation\nof a cleft lip or palate. Certain medications may also lead to these\ndeformities.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reducing the Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to reduce your child\u2019s risk of developing a\ncleft lip or cleft palate if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Prepare for pregnancy. <\/strong>If you are not yet\npregnant, take some time to prepare your body to be the best environment\npossible for your child. For example, you may implement a plan to lose excess\nweight, or you might work with your doctor to control your diabetes.<\/li><li><strong>Consider taking prenatal vitamins.<\/strong> Proper\nnutrition during pregnancy can help your child develop properly in the womb.\nYour doctor may even recommend a specific type or brand of prenatal vitamins.<\/li><li><strong>Don\u2019t use alcohol or tobacco. <\/strong>Both of\nthese substances have been associated with a number of birth abnormalities. Attempt\nto stop using them before you get pregnant.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, there is no known cause for cleft lip and\ncleft palate. In other cases, a factor you cannot control, such as genetics,\nmay be to blame for these conditions. If your child is born with a cleft lip or\ncleft palate, there is no need to despair. Although these defects can cause a\nnumber of complications, they <em>are <\/em>highly treatable. Consult with a\nqualified oral surgeon. They will evaluate your child\u2019s facial structures and design\na plan for treating your child. In most cases, it is possible to perform\nsurgery to repair a cleft lip 3 \u2013 6 months after a child is born.
